SERVED IN UNITED STATES ARMY FROM 22 FEBRUARY 1943 TO 31 MAY 1946; ASSIGNED TO COMPANY A, 1ST BATTALION, 163RD INFANTRY, 41ST INFANTRY DIVISION FROM 07 JULY 1943 TO 30 JULY 1944, AS COMPANY RIFLEMAN-SCOUT.

PARTICIPATED IN THE NEW GUINEA & DUTCH NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGNS AND FIVE ASSAULT LANDINGS. WHILE ASSIGNED AS SCOUT, ARMED WITH THE UNIT BROWNING AUTOMATIC RIFLE, ON HIS SECOND ASSAULT LANDING ON BIAK ISLAND, WAS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED IN HIS ARM AND THROAT ON 07 JUNE 1944; HAD TO BE MEDICALLY EVACUATED TO HOSPITAL SHIP FOR TREATMENT, EVENTUALLY EVACUATED TO THE LETTERMAN GENERAL HOSPITAL IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, THEN MC CAW ARMY HOSPTIAL, WALLA-WALLA, WASHINGINGTON, FROM WHICH HE WAS MEDICALLY DISCHARGE ON 31 MAY 1946.

AWARDED: PURPLE HEART MEDAL, GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, WORLD WAR II VICTORY MEDAL (JAPAN), AMERICAN THEATER SERVICE MEDAL, ASIATIC-PACIFIC SERVICE MEDAL WITH TWO BRONZE STARS, MARKSMAN RIFLE BADGE (M1), AND THE WWII HONORABLE SERVICE LAPEL BUTTON.
